MOTION That Council acknowledge the community service particularly to the Pittwater community of Margaret Makin.

BACKGROUND FROM COUNCILLOR ALEX MCTAGGART Margaret has announced her retirement as Secretary of the Bayview-Church Point Residents Association INC due to ill health and it is appropriate that I acknowledge her community service in a public forum. A short summary of Margaret’s service:  Margaret and her husband Frank have resided at Church Point since 1968, they have three children and three grandchildren.  After careers in secretarial work and as an air hostess, Margaret trained as a primary school teacher and taught at Elanora Heights Primary School and Bilgola Plateau Primary School.  Since retiring in 1991, Margaret has been involved with the local and broader community volunteering on committees of The Smith Family’s VIEW Clubs of Australia including serving as a Zone and National Councillor.

  • Margaret is currently Zone Co-ordinator for Garden clubs of Australia, Northern Beaches, Secretary of Narrabeen Lake Garden Club and President of Manly Central Probus.

  • On the Bayview-Church Point Residents Association inc Margaret served as President and currently Secretary. Margeret was association representative for the Environmental and other reference groups of the former Pittwater Council from 1993 to 2016.

  • Margaret has been a strong and tenacious advocate for her local community on matters such as parking for off shore residents at Church Point, amenities at Thomas Stephen Reserve, sea grasses including the “calurpa” infestation, sewerage over flow at Bayview Baths and water quality within the Pittwater waterway.

  • Margaret was also a strong advocate for the retention of Mona Vale Hospital and improved health services. As is usually the case community leaders need family support and Margret's husband Frank needs to be acknowledged for his contribution and support.

In accordance with Council’s Code of Meeting Practice Clause 4.15(a) I offer the following report on this matter to assist Council in the deliberation of this motion:

At the Australia Day Citizenship ceremony each year, Council presents a number of awards to members of the Northern Beaches Community, including Citizen of the Year awards, and up to 15 awards for Outstanding Community Service. These awards recognise a person’s efforts & contributions to the local community. Nominations for the 2019 Australia Day awards are expected to open in October 2018, at which time the criteria for assessing nominations will also be published. This may be an appropriate way to recognise Ms Makin’s valuable contributions.
